Where do you start when you are introducing yourself to the whole world — I’ll start with hello! I’m Sarah Power, a Graphic Designer & Visual Artist living in Surrey, British Columbia.

My mother likes to tell people “She’s been drawing since she could hold a pencil in her hand” — and it’s true I’ve been creative my whole life. I was accepted into the Honours Arts program in high school and did several exhibits, won some awards and worked on a mural with the Spirit of Youth Mural Project back in 1998. I graduated in 1999 and my dream came true when I got my acceptance letter to go to Emily Carr University of Art and Design. I did my foundation year there an it was incredible, life changing and totally overwhelming. After that I decided to work for a while and get some life experience, and when I was sick of retail, I decided to finish my education at the Art institute of Vancouver and earned my Diploma of Graphic Design in 2005.

Artisan Laser Works, a small Laser etching business in surrey, hired me straight out of school. I designed artwork to be etched into stone, wood and other substrates as home decor — things like backsplashes, flooring and door inserts. It was an amazing experience to manage projects from concept to completion; creating the artwork, getting it ready to etch in the computer, running the Vytek Co2 laser, and doing the finishing. I also was responsible for created the marketing materials for the company. For the 6 years I was there I loved that the job truly was a marriage of art and design, I got to do some great things with photoshop and at the same time got to work with my hands in the shop.

I went on to work for Allegra Surrey, a marketing and print business in surrey for four and a half years. While I was there I had the privilege of doing a ton of print design for small businesses, all kinds of Branding and marketing material; Logos and Identity packages that need to work across multiple channels, Business cards and brochures, simple carbonless forms, signs and decals, Books and catalogs and so much more. I am now so familiar with file preparation for all kinds of printing — digital, press, wide format – you name it.

What I loved about this job was the problem solving — its like a working on a really satisfying puzzle when you are putting a brochure together, fitting in all the typesetting while making sure that the visual communication harmonizes with the text and is as professional as possible — this is the kind of work I love.

I am also doing artwork whenever I can. I never stopped loving drawing but now I have fallen in love with watercolour and ink painting. I have had the opportunity to do some cool pieces over the years, including a giant mural, that took a year and a half, for Peace Portal Alliance Church with my sister-in-law, partner in crime and best friend Michelle Clark.

More Recently I have been showing my work at local artisan markets and have had some of my pieces featured in exhibits around Surrey. in the autumn of 2018 I was one of four artists in the Surrey Glows Artist Collective who where awarded the Crescent Beach Pop-Up Gallery to exhibit for 6 weeks. During that exhibit I exhibited many new works on wood panels with Art Resin and ran a successful 2 day resin workshop with my talented friend Jenny Lewis.

So, I’m still making mum proud, I’m one of the lucky ones who gets to pursue a careering what they love.

Now that I’ve put myself out there, I would love an opportunity connect with you. you can signup for my newsletter or follow me on social media I am most active on my instagram page @SarahPoweredArt.
